In The Swing is a handmade ceramic vase, coil built with a deep red terracotta clay. It is then washed with a white underglaze translucent enough that the warm earthy colour of the natural clay can still be seen. The application method along with a high temp firing creates a unique texture to the surface leaving a natural and delicate finish
The illustration is created using a technique referred to as sgraffito. This involves carefully carving the top surface of the pot before the clay is fired with a needle or potter’s pin. It is a time intensive process which leaves no room for mistake.
